Size matters. Especially when pertaining to male contraception.
In somewhat blush-worthy news, the FDA has backed the move to bring smaller ‘bespoke’ condoms to market because the average size of 6.69 inches is TOO BIG for American men so they keep slipping off.
- On average, the erect penis size in America is 5.57 inches, approximately an inch shorter than the standard condom size
- Experts say this is a main reason why only one-third of single American men use a condom during sex.
- The FDA now has a policy to change that and will allow companies to make smaller condoms
A company is producing smaller ‘bespoke’ condoms for American men because the average size, 6.69 inches, is too large.
The CDC figures on recent condom use has discovered that just a third of single men are using protection, and one of the most common reasons is that they ‘slip off’.
Indeed, a study conducted on almost 2,000 men by Indiana University, revealed that the average length is 5.57 inches – approximately an inch shorter than the average size condom.
The Food and Drug Administration, which regulates healthy industry standards, have agreed that there is a need for smaller condoms, in an effort to lower the rates of unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.
This policy change will allow manufacturing companies to produce condoms of all sizes.
As a result, this has given the company myONE Perfect Fit, a custom brand of condoms made by Boston Company Global Protection Corp, the go ahead, which has been lobbying for this change for over seven years.
Standard condom sizes range between 6.7and 8.3 inches long, and approximately 4.1 inches in width.
Data collected by One Condoms found condoms only fit 12 percent of men. Widths and lengths vary among the rest and are not accommodated by the one-size-fits-all approach.
These findings sit in line with scientific research.
A high-profile study, conducted by Dr. Debby Herbenick at Indiana University, asked 1,661 men in the U.S. to give the size of their penis.
Researchers conducting the study were not involved in the measuring, leaving this phase to each individual.
According to Dr. Herbenick, she trusted men to provide accurate measurements, since any overestimation would leave them with a poor-fitting condom.
‘If they reported a bigger-than-reality size to us, they would get a baggier condom,’ she said. ‘If they reported a smaller-than-reality size to us, the condom would be too tight.’
Varying lengths were documented in the study – ranging from 1.5 inches to just over 10.
The research team also discovered that the size of the erect penis varied depending on how the erection was achieved. Oral sex showed to be more arousing than masturbation or stimulation from sexual fantasies.
Taking variability into account, ONE Condoms offers 60 different dimensions, from 4.9 to 9.4 inches in length and from 3.5 to 5.0 inches in width.
Davin Wedel, president of ONE Condoms, explained: “You might be able to squeeze your large hands into a size-small glove, but that doesn’t mean it will be comfortable to wear. We want the world to know you shouldn’t have to sacrifice comfort for safety when it comes to condoms. Whether big, small or in between, myONE has a condom perfect for you.”
To purchase a bespoke condom, men must measure themselves or print off a measuring kit from the ONE website. Samples are also available of one bigger and one smaller of their size, in case the measurements are off.
