A 55-year-old woman who has suffered from sciatica for 13 years has had her pain cured in just one day using a $62.00 cannabis oil purchased online.
Brenda Davidson from Kirkwall, Orkney, suffered crippling back pain for over a decade that often brought her to tears from her suffering.
Desperate for relief, as strong painkillers had been ineffective, Davidson turned to cannabis drops which she claims ended her pain.
Davidson says that her condition turned her life upside down, with the intense pain often leaving her unable to accomplish everyday tasks such as walking her dog.
In an eager attempt to find a cure, she turned to legally available cannabis oil, available online and in select boutique shops without a prescription in Scotland.
After just one day of using the oil that she purchased online for just $62.00, Davidson stated that her pain had been completely taken away.
“If it does start to niggle a bit by tea-time I just take another drop and it’s fine again – I really did not think it would work, but it has.”
“The NHS should definitely look into providing it on prescription – surely it would work out cheaper for them than giving out all these prescriptions for painkillers.”
Mrs. Davidson plans to eventually stop taking her sciatica medication completely. “Altogether, it’s the best $62.00 I have ever spent,” she exclaimed.
Is It Legal?
Not yet approved by the NHS in Scotland, cannabis oil is sold without containing THC, the psychoactive component that causes someone to feel high.
Since last year it has been legal to buy in the UK, such as England and Whales, as the government approved its use by licensing it as a medicine.
This CBD oil is a derivative that does not cause a high. Health officials have admitted that it has a restorative, corrective or modifying effect when given to humans.
Mrs. Davidson’s case is similar to that of Billy Caldwell, an 11-year-old boy from Northern Ireland whose story made headlines when he became the first Briton to be prescribed the oil in April under the NHS.
What is Cannabis Oil?
A cannabis-derived nutritional supplement, cannabidiol oil contains a wide range of medicinal benefits.
Epilepsy, rheumatism, migraines, psoriasis, acne, multiple sclerosis, and depression are just some of the conditions that people have reported this oil to help with.
Cannabidiol oil does not contain any THC, which is the psychoactive component of cannabis. CBD oil will not get you high.
It has been legal to purchase in the UK for the past year and can be found online or in some local street stores.
Cannabidiol, CBD, is a natural compound found in the marijuana plant. The plant contains over 80 cannabinoids such as CBD.
This mineral-rich oil is extracted from the plant and is usually bottled but also comes in the form of soap, chewing gum or a vape oil for e-cigarettes.
Cannabis Oil in Scotland
The Scottish Medicines Consortium has not approved cannabis oil to be used on the NHS, so it’s not readily available.
However, special requests can be made by patients for specific medicine that they believe may help.
Their GP or consultant must sign off on this requests and the final decision is then decided by a panel of experts.
Director of Pharmacy at NHS Orkney, Christopher Nicolson said: “Cannabis oil has not yet been considered for use in Scotland by the Scottish Medicines Consortium, therefore it is not yet available on prescription.”
“However, in general terms, there is scope for doctors to make a request if they wish to prescribe the product. This involves an application being made to the office of the Medical Director.”
“NHS Orkney would then consider the request, and take expert advice before any agreement to fund the treatment.”
