Perhaps Folgers had it right all along. But, here’s a twist.
“The best part of waking up is Viagra in your cup???”
At least, this slogan rings true for a coffee company from Grand Prairie, Texas that has been forced to pull one of its products after it was found to contain a hidden drug that gives a Viagra-type boost.
Bestherbs Coffee voluntarily recalled its New Kopi Jantan Traditional Natural Herbs Coffee last week due to the undeclared presence of “desmethyl carbodenafil” — a chemical similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
Last year, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning against the coffee for containing unreported desmethyl carbodenafil, which could interfere with the effectiveness of meds taken by those with heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure.
The interaction of these chemicals could drastically lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.
As of yet, no one has reported any problems after drinking the coffee. Yet, the company is recalling the product nearly a year later as a precautionary measure.
Kopi Jantan coffee was marketed as a “natural” male enhancement product and was sold online and in stores nationwide from July 2014 to June 2016. Each box sold came with twenty-five 13-gram packs of instant coffee. The FDA’s warning was due to the active ingredient being unlisted, possibly leading to health risks.
Kopi Jantan, a Malaysian phrase that roughly translates to “male coffee,” can still be found on eBay under different manufacturers who claim it will “improve energy, improve sexual ability, and increase vigor.”
The FDA warns on their site against “fraudulent” products that claim to be dietary supplements.
Michael Levy, director of FDA’s Division of New Drugs and Labeling Compliance, stated that these supplements often contain hidden ingredients “at much higher levels than those found in an approved drug product.”
As it turns out, Viagra-like chemicals weren’t the only cause for concern in this product. Tests also uncovered undeclared traces of milk.
Anyone with the product is encouraged to stop using it and contact the company for a full refund.
If you have this product or know of someone who does, please inform them of these findings.
